Why is the Mustang selling so well in the UK?

One of the most iconic and recognisable cars in the world? The Mustang is definitely a contender for that title. After years of stealing hearts and the limelight the Ford Mustang is hailed as one of the greats, and surprisingly they are selling very well in the UK. But why is this?

For many of us here in Blighty there is a notion of American motoring that we find quite appealing. The idealised notion of wide open roads, roaring past Mesas in the Arizona desert in a lazy V8 muscle car is hard to ignore. Especially when on a wet M25 on a Tuesday. It is no surprise, then, that the Ford Mustang is such a revered car in the UK.

Sadly many great ideas are often grounded once practicality rears its ugly head, and this is one of the thorns in the UK Mustang owner’s side. While on american roads the Mustang makes a great deal of sense due to their width, length and lack of twists it does tend to become challenged by UK streets. Due to the Mustang’s width as well as having the steering wheel on the ‘wrong’ side many prospective buyers are put off or intimidated by driving it in the UK after mere forethought.

As such we don’t often see Mustangs on UK roads but when one does it is such an occasion that it sets off the chain of daydreaming once again. To those driving a Mustang in the UK, we salute you. In the recent past it seems more and more are coming out of the woodwork as numbers sold at auction are ever increasing, but which Mustangs are UK buyers snapping up?

Using the interactive graph below we can see that when sliding the price to less than £100,000 the UK Mustang market is looking strong. Since the turn of the millennium Mustangs have been steadily increasing in price and over time the highest earners have been the special editions, as with any vehicle model. The most pricey models are the Boss and Super Cobra editions which are infamous for being among the most performance oriented ‘stangs to leave the factory. The most expensive sold in the UK was a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang with Coys of Kensington.

Of the rest of the team it is the fastback models that are more highly coveted in the UK in comparison to coupé and convertible models, occupying the top of the mid range for the ‘classic’ older Mustangs. Of the early models we also see that Hollywood evocations and special editions hold their value well in relation to other models, with the Eleanor bodykit and Bullit edition cars selling for a premium.

Although made years apart 60’s mustangs are trading at similar prices to the most recent ones at auctions. Of the millennial Mustangs we again see the Shelby models occupying the higher prices for these vehicles but of the newer ‘Stangs there are not a great many changing hands at the moment  at auction. As for the original Mustang, they are entering a noisy renaissance with a new breed of enthusiast.

There is always going to be a community of admirers and people chasing the Mustang dream. As a second or third car the Mustang makes an excellent and left field choice compared to other comparable ‘fun’ cars. Due to their simplicity as well as wide support networks in the UK they may not be as intimidating to own as previously thought.
