We buy an MX-5 from The Market!

It was bound to happen, this MX-5 ownership thing. Like a small itch, the idea of Roadster ownership had been gnawing at us for some time, yet still, we ignored it and went about our business as usual. After all, we’d just replaced the clutch in our office Fiat Coupe and it was finally running like a dream. We used it for a few longer trips out of London and everyone in the office had finally agreed that it was a slow-burn type of car; one that doesn’t impress on a short drive, yet one that we were all falling in love with. Why bother swapping it?

Maybe it was the long winter, or maybe it was the distant memory of wind in our hair (or wind where hair used to be, in some cases). But gradually MX-5 related material began to circulate around the office. There were inspirational YouTube videos shared via email, and the frequency MX-5 related Instagram posts shared between us increased dramatically. Conversation regularly swung around to the investment potential of clean Mk1 MX-5s, and we even found ourselves discussing them in the pub during Friday night drinks.

It’s not that we didn’t like the Fiat anymore – far from it. But the Roadster bug was biting. A round-table discussion saw the Fiat casually listed for sale, and then a few weeks later it was sold. Our bluff had indeed been called.

It was barely a week after the Fiat departed that online auction specialists The Market listed this clean 1997 MX-5 Harvard edition. With a small budget for an affordable sports car burning a hole in our proverbial pocket and a week of warm weather forecast, we’d all decided that we wanted it before the auction even ended. The car was located up in the Scottish Borders, and we were already planning which roads we’d taken when bringing it back to London before the deal was done.

Being one of 500 Harvard Edition’s, it has the factory red leather trim and the 1.8 motor. We’ve not seen it in person but it looks to be a great little car, and we can’t wait to welcome it to the Classic Car Auction Results garage.

We’ll pick it up tomorrow (Saturday April 21), and will take it to Sunday Scramble at Bicester Heritage on Sunday April 22. It’s set to be a great weekend of classic motoring, and the unexpectedly warm Spring weather that the UK is currently enjoying has us even more excited for our future adventures in this car.

Stay tuned for more!
