Brightwells returned to Bicester Heritage on Wednesday 11 April for their Classic & Vintage Cars and Motorcycles sale, with an interesting assortment of varied mechanical temptations on offer.

Of note were several pre-war classics, and an interesting array of Land Rovers stretching the lineage of the Series model. Below we list a small handful of lots that stood out to us as being particularly intriguing and a chart at the bottom which shows past auction results over time – be sure to search for any classic of your choosing.

Matra Simca Baghera S – sold for £4,480

Bonus points for obscurity here – lots of them. We’re struggling to think of a rarer and more unique sports car for under five grand that ticks so many boxes. True, it’s quite a left-of-field choice, but in the period the Baghera was quicker than the Alfa Romeo GT Junior that it was benchmarked against, and Matra is a company known mostly for their efforts in Formula One and at Le Mans. This one is ready to go, and while it would benefit from a little tidying, future collectability is ensured.

Ford Puma Racing – sold for £9,520

The Puma Racing is often written off as one for the boy-racers, but we believe that they are headed for almost certain collectability. They are fast, they have proper bespoke pieces like Sparco seats and Alcon brakes, and are truly differentiated from run-of-the-mill models by their steel flared guards. It is the Escort RS1600 of the nineties, and the limited run of just 500 built ensures a bright future. Not a bad investment for under 10 grand.

1957 Austin A35 race car – sold for £17,920

We’re firm believers that classics need to be enjoyed, and a classic is only as good as what you can do with it. Take the humble Austin A35 race car pictured here – it competed in the 2016 Goodwood Revival, and there are supplied pictures of it competing at tracks as exotic as Spa Francorchamps. In the context of a professionally prepared racing car that’s eligible for an invitation to all of the best blue riband historic events, 18 grand seems like great value to us.

1970 MGB Roadster – sold for £9,520

In a world of 40 grand Porsche 912s and 100 grand E-Types, has the humble MGB ever been better value? This example was restored in the nineties and has been driven less than 25,000 miles since. Sure, they are plentiful, mechanically basic and hence unlikely to become uber-collectible anytime soon, but you won’t be thinking about any of that as you’re motoring through the countryside on a Sunday afternoon.
