BMW 635CSi breaking estimates and records – What’s going on?

The E24 BMW 6 Series has seen sudden auction value growth in the past two years

The ‘E24’ BMW 635CSi might be one of the most luxurious GTs of the eighties, but there’s nothing relaxed about how they have been performing at auction over the past couple of years.

The original BMW 6 Series, known to fans by its chassis code ‘E24’, was for a number of years a group of large engined eighties coupes that struggled to get off the classified pages.

The perceived high-running costs of the ‘big six’, as well as it’s then unfashionable geometric styling,  left prices depressed for most of the ‘2010s’.

However, a new appreciation for the ‘modern classics’ of the late ’70s and ’80s has seen BMW 6 Series values rally.

This is particularly true of the 635CSi – the range-topping model when in M635CSi guise.

The BMW 635CSi has shot up in value in recent years

The M635CSi is the top spec E24 6 Series, distinguishable by it’s BBS wheels, colour-coded wing mirrors, ‘M’ badges and rear spoiler.

The past two years have seen prices jump remarkably, suggesting an unusually sharp change of demand in the Bimmer. Earlier this year, we saw the first road spec 6 Series (as opposed to former race cars) fetch over £100,000.

While that car was a particularly exceptional example, in fantastic condition with just 15k miles on the clock, it’s remarkable just how much less a similarly fantastic 6 Series could be bought for just a few years ago.

It was as recently as October 2015 when a 46k mile M635CSi in ‘outstanding’ condition fetched almost half that price, £60,000. Indeed in 2014 you could pick up a Sultan’s immaculate former M635CSi for just £30,000.

You could disregard this one result as an outlier of course. ‘Just two collectors losing sense of reality’, I hear you say.

While it’s true this figure has not been matched since, it’s also true that standard 635CSi’s are now fetching as much as 2015s M635CSi in similar conidition.

It’s clear then, that demand for the BMW 635CSi has boomed in the past two years, but why do you think there is this sudden surge in appreciation? Or are you a recent 6 Series owner? In which case, what made you buy one in the past few years?
