Coys Autosport 2017 – Auction Roundup

Car shows are the perfect venue to show off a company’s latest wares and spread the word about the latest and greatest in automotive technology. Similarly, they attract large crowds of car fans who are interested in the movements in the car world; what better audience for Coys of Kensington to auction off over 50 classic cars in front of, then?

Excitement in the hall was high with curious crowds gathering around the edges of the Coys pen staring inwards at the hive of activity and classic machinery. The auction promised a great deal and with some special cars and motorsport heroes on display, from four Porsche GT3 cup cars to a Gold leaf covered Cadillac Fleetwood Drophead Coupé there was no missing what Coys had to offer over the weekend.

The auction started off strongly with an Australian race prepped Mini beating its estimate and selling for £30,000 hammer price. Now £30,000 might seem a high price for a Mini but when looking at the car’s spec sheet it looks like a seriously fun piece of kit and that price started to become reasonable, causing this journalist to come over a touch jealous and start searching the classifieds! Regardless of any green eyes this Mini continues the trend in ever rising Mini values and sits comfortably inside the top third for Mini prices at UK Auctions.A Mini sold at auction for £30,000 at Coys Autosport 2017

Coys are known for having some rare and exotic cars and the Autosport auction was no different with the brad van shaped Fiat 500C ‘Toppolino’ and S1 Defender alternative Alfa Romeo 1900 M Matta providing some serious desirability despite falling foul of their estimates. Sadly this seemed to be the trend of the auction with 64% of lots’ hammer prices coming in shy of their lower estimates.

By no means a dull auction there were a great many interesting and desirable cars however none so inspirational to smash their estimates or to kick off 2017 with the bang one might have expected.

Encouraging signs though were a 280SL selling for hammer price £45,000, showing that the soft top Merc trend from last year is continuing and we await to see what happens with these cars throughout 2017. Similarly the auction showed that DB7 prices are just low enough to still provide an entry point to the brand, however this doesn’t look set to stay the case for long as an inline-six model sold for £28,000, supporting the increasing value of the model. If you’re in the market for a DB7 V12 Vantage then the Coys result should spring you into action and snap one up before their prices go supersonic.
